Focusing on the best that has ever
been thought, said, or recorded for history is at the
heart of the liberal arts and sciences curriculum. To
have this focus, and in the end to become a complete
person, requires reading, writing, and vigorous discussion.
All these components are found in the study of English.
With a well read mind, a flair for writing, and a clever
wit, the real world of job hunting becomes a much easier
task. Perhaps this is why many say that English is the
most versatile major for college students.
The Department of English offers majors and minors in
both literature and writing for students preparing for
careers in such fields as writing, teaching, publishing,
business, librarianship, law, medicine, ministry, and
diplomacy. Courses are also available for non-majors
seeking personal enrichment or wishing to expand their
powers of written expression. The Bachelor of Arts degree
may be earned in either literature or writing; the Bachelor
of Fine Arts degree may be earned in creative writing.
